Captain Tom Moore – 100th Birthday – Police Message

Dear partners,

I am writing to you to inform you that we are encouraging members of the public showing their support for veteran fundraiser Captain Tom Moore to do so from their own homes and at a safe distance.

Captain Tom will mark his 100th birthday on Thursday 30 April, following his rise to fame after raising more than £28 million through his sponsored walk for NHS charities.

His newfound celebrity status has rocketed the former Army captain into public consciousness, with tens of thousands of people sending him birthday cards to congratulate him on becoming centenarian. However, there are concerns well-wishers may be tempted to visit the village  on his birthday to show their support, going against government guidance for unnecessary travel. We are therefore asking people to stay at home and celebrate this milestone birthday and their appreciation for Captain Tom from their own doorsteps and/or using social media.

Bedfordshire Police will provide a small policing presence during the day in order to ensure the security of both Captain Tom and his home, and the safety of the wider public on what will no doubt be a day of great celebration for all.

Captain Tom is a beacon of the Bedfordshire community and no-one can quite believe the staggering amounts his story has inspired people to donate for our frontline colleagues in the NHS. He is a true hero.

We will be proud to support him and celebrate his birthday from a distance, and will ensure that members of the Marston Moretaine community where he lives are also adhering to the government measures.

We would appreciate your support in adhering to the guidance and in sharing this message with your local community via your existing communication channels.

Thank you.
