What is proposed?
Infinis, in partnership with Cranfield University, is proposing to supply some of the power generated at the Brogborough Clean Energy Hub directly to Cranfield University through a private cable link. A planning application has been submitted to Central Bedfordshire Council.
The Brogborough Clean Energy Hub is located at the former landfill site off Woburn Road, Lidlington. It generates electricity from captured methane from the capped landfill, and a solar park is currently being constructed on the site.
Infinis states that the connection would increase the amount of renewable energy supplied to Cranfield University, reduce its carbon footprint, support research into low-carbon aviation and help manage the risks of fluctuating energy prices or grid connection problems.
Proposed route and works
The proposed underground cable route would run from the Brogborough Clean Energy Hub through Rectory Wood Park, along Rectory Lane and Court Road, across the High Street, through Merchant Lane and into Cranfield University. A route map is shown on page 2.
Infinis states that installation would be carried out in stages. It says roads would not need to be fully closed; traffic lights would be used and vehicles would take turns using half of the road where works are taking place.
